Isaiah 43:1

You Are Known By Your Name

I was in an office not too long ago, waiting my turn. A fellow walked in after me and right away two or three people called him by name.

I knew what this meant: In this place, he is somebody. He’s not just a “hey you.” He’s a name. He’s a friend. As he took his seat to wait his turn, I noticed how relaxed he was. Almost like he was at home.

There’s something about being known by name that can make all the difference in the world. So often it’s so easy to feel like just a number, like just another file in the stack. It’s easy to wonder just where we fit in.

However, when God surveys the human race, he doesn’t merely see a great multitude. He sees you. He recognizes your face and he knows you by name. That’s how much you matter to him. You’re not just a “hey you.” He says that you’re somebody.

Through the ancient prophet, he spoke these words: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; You are Mine.” (Isaiah 43:1)

The God of all creation knows you. He knows your struggles, your dreams, and your fears. He knows your best intentions and your worst impulses. He knows every good step and every misstep. He knows your entire story from beginning to end.

And still, he says: “You are Mine.”

There will be times when we’re overlooked by others. There may even be days when we don’t even recognize ourselves. But who you are isn’t rooted in what “they” say. Neither is it defined by one’s failure or success.

Your identity is rooted in the staying power of this promise: He redeemed you. He knows you. And He loves you.

In moments of doubt, let this be your anchor. You’re not unknown. You’re not alone. He calls you by name. You belong to him.
