Just Enough Light

Just Enough Light

Some friends and I were talking a while back about a few long-term plans. We’re different ages, so “long term” is perceived in a variety of ways. But we all agreed on one thing: There’s no telling where the road might lead.

We often wish God would map out every detail of the journey ahead: “Where is this going? How long will it take? Are we there yet?” But more often than not, he gives us just enough light for the next few steps.

As it turns out, that’s enough.

Jesus taught his disciples to pray for their daily bread. Scripture promises that we can expect to receive as much as we need when we need it.

As this is true for our daily bread, it’s true for our daily light. God reveals as much of the road as we need to see. The rest is our walk of faith. David wrote…

For You will light my lamp; The Lord my God will enlighten my darkness. (Psalm 18:28)

Have you ever hiked through the woods late at night with only the light of a lamp? You can’t see everything, but you can see enough for the next few steps. And that’s all you need.

In the paths we take, there may be darkness around the bend, but the next few steps are made clear through his presence and through his Word.

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. (Psalm 119:105)

What happens next year? Next month? Next week? Who knows? But you can be sure that God sees each twist and turn you can’t.

And you can walk today in the light you’ve been given, trusting him with each step you take.
